Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson announced the communities that are going to get interchanges during the 2026 budget statement
The Accra-Kumasi Expressway will link the capital to the Ashanti Region, through the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions
As part of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway project under the Big Push Infrastructure Programme, eight communities are going to get interchanges.
The expressway will be Ghana’s first modern six-lane bi-directional Class A Expressway.
During the 2026 budget presentation, Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson announced that eight communities are going to get interchanges as part of this project.
"...the expressway will feature eight major interchanges, each designed to ease urban congestion and improve regional connectivity."
The interchanges will be located at:
Accra Hub
Adeiso
Asamankese
Akyem Oda
Ofoase
Lake Bosomtwe
Kumasi
In 2025, the government dedicated GH¢13.8 billion to strategic road projects under this programme.
The minister said implementation is advancing across all regions, with projects selected based on economic returns, regional equity, and alignment with our 24-Hour Economy.
About the Accra-Kumasi Expressway
The Accra-Kumasi Expressway will link the capital to the Ashanti Region, through the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions, linking the south to north.
The expressway, which is on a new alignment, will reduces the current travel distance by over 50 kilometers, from 250 kilometers to 198.7 kilometers.
Forson also said the Accra-Kumasi Expressway is expected to halve travel time between Accra and Kumasi, reduce transport costs by nearly 40%, and create over 30,000 direct and indirect jobs during construction.
"Beyond mobility, it will stimulate industrial parks, logistics hubs, and service economies along its route, powering the 24-Hour Economy and strengthening Ghana’s competitiveness."
Road projects announced in 2025 mid-year budget
The government earlier announced major road infrastructure projects over the next three years in the 2025 mid-year budget.
Forson said roads in 166 constituencies would receive attention. He also said said the government would rehabilitate 10km of roads annually in each of these constituencies.

13 Rehabilitation of Asikuma Junction – Anyirawasi Road

Government scraps COVID-19 levy
YEN.com.gh reported the government's move to scrap the COVID-19 levy in the budget.
The Finance Minister explained that abolishing the COVID-19 levy alone will return GH¢3.7 billion to individuals and businesses, while broader VAT reforms are expected to benefit households and enterprises by nearly GH¢6 billion.
